Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
